Tamed Dragons and Sandwich-Boxes The Significance of the Railway in Dombey and Son - Literature Essay Samples

The railway system brought an air of uneasiness to British society during the nineteenth century, during which change was felt behind every corner. While this feeling of skepticism was felt through all social classes, the middle and lower classes had the most to gain with this industrial advancement. Dicken’s novel, Dombey and Son, set the stage for this time of change through his characters, such as the Toodle family, and settings, being Stagg’s Garden, to show how drastically the railway system transformed social class and economic disparity. Furthermore, it also dismantled, literally and figuratively in the case of Mr. Carker, the upper class’s hierarchy that was suppressing the lower class. It connected people and places in a way never seen before. One of the most important contributions that the railway provided in this novel is the transformation of Stagg’s Garden. The once â€Å"miserable waste ground, where the refuse matter had been heaped of yore, was swallowed up and gone†¦the old by streets now swarmed with passengers and vehicles of every kind,† (p. 211). Stagg’s Garden was essentially a waste land where impoverish families, such as the Toodles were known for inhabiting. More so, the inhabitants were skeptical and suspicious of the railways coming. It was, â€Å"regarded by its population as a sacred grove not to be withered by rail roads,† (p.64). Now, the railway chugged through and took away all disparity, leaving, â€Å"railway hotels, coffee-houses, lodging- houses, boarding-houses; railways plans, maps, views, wrappers, bottles, sandwich-boxes, and time tables†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (p. 211). The railway literally wiped the hopeless and destitute Stagg’s Garden off the map and left behind this thriving tourist community themed in the industrial phenomena itself that was so feared. It provided prosperity for the people in Stagg’s Garden, it provided better living conditions and, most importantly, it provided jobs for the inhabitants. This is evident prosperity in the Toodle family, who so benefited from this tame dragon gliding through their neighborhood. Everyone knew who Toodle the Engine Fireman was in this bustling community. In the beginning of the novel the Toodle family is struggling to make ends meet and is pinched to put Mrs. Polly Toodles to work as a wet nurse for Mr. Dombey. Mr. Dombey inquired Mr. Toodles after learning he had five children at the time, â€Å"Why, it’s as much as you can afford to keep them!† (p. 19). After Mrs. Polly is fired for her actions it leaves the reader wondering if the family will make it with so many children and so little income. However, in an encounter with Mr. Dombey on page two hundred sixty seven Mr. Toodle states, â€Å"†¦we’re a doin’ pretty well, Sir; we haven’t no cause to complain in the worldly way, Sir. We’ve had four more since then, Sir, but we rubs on.† This reinforces the idea that the railway narrowed the economic disparity gap in London at the time. The Toodle family has a total of nine children throughout the book and Mr. Toodle confidently tells Mr. Dombey that they are essentially well off say s a lot about the stable income the railway provides. The comparison between these two gentlemen in two different scenarios within the novel shows the drastic difference in the lives of the people. It is one thing to have a visible difference in the appearance of the town, yet you can still have poverty in the background that is covered up by the elites and upper class. However, in this situation we have two very different gentlemen from two very different social and economic backgrounds in the same place having a conversation. While Mr. Dombey may feel superior in the situation, he is put into place by being rejected of his money for the first time in life by a â€Å"lesser† man. This is a profound change within the society and culture of London that is happening on a large scale. The Toodles represent the lower and middle class of London that is constantly being oppressed by people like Mr. Dombey and Dickens shows, intentionally or not, this change. In the case of Mr. Carker, we see how the railways were dismantling this social system in a more realistic way. He was fleeing from Mr. Dombey, and after days of sleep deprivation he slips to his death at the hands of the tamed dragon, with Dombey as witness. The striking scene of page seven hundred thirty eight, â€Å"†¦felt the earth tremble—knew in a moment that the rush was to come—uttered a shriek—looked round—saw the red eyes†¦struck him limb from limb, and lick his stream of life up with its fiery heat, and cast his mutilated fragments in the air.† His death is painted as a train crashing through the station itself, with no one to stop it but itself. Dickens describes the scene so vividly and almost gore-like. However, his death is also a symbol for society being torn apart, limb by limb. Mr. Carker is a man of such high status up till the end, where he finds himself in the bottom of the tracks – like a coal digger. This is s imilar to Carker himself, a proud man, sure of himself. He was so sure of himself that he attempted adultery with his boss’s wife, of which became his demise. The most fascinating aspect of the train symbolizing Carker’s death isn’t the fact that it killed him. What killed him was the timely manner that he met Dombey on the train. This incident wouldn’t have been possible if he had taken a coach as his get-away transportation. The train brought the two men together, it gave them a common purpose. It connected them, same as it did everyone at the time. It allowed for Europe to become a cohesive and productive continent. Mr. Dombey is a man that flourished from this industrial revolution. He represents the food production it increased, the decreasing cost of living, and the people involved by the process. All of which attribute to the narrowing economic and social disparity. Mr. Carker represents the part of society that refused to accept this change. They perished in this new age of technology and industrialism. Similar to the usage of ships for Dombey and Son, Mr. Carker’s presence was no longer needed within the novel as a whole, and made way for change. Mr. Dombey accepted this change through his business and his family relations. This is evident in the final chapter most of all as he is described, â€Å"†¦[He] is a white haired gentleman, whose face bears the heavy marks of care and suffering; but they are traces of a storm that has passed on forever, and left a clear evening in its track,† (p. 828). It’s as if his journey in the novel is a trip that starts on this boat in a storm and ends on a smooth train ride. Mr. Carker, however, bought the wrong ticket, and as a result received an unfortunate outcome. Dickens use of the railway in Dombey and Son is minor through the majority of the novel. However, its significance behind the scenes is great, as shown in examples in the transformation of Stagg’s Garden from a waste land to bustling railway community, the Toodles family prospering as a result of the economic stability the railway provides, and even Mr. Carker’s demise as a result of the railway bringing people together under circumstances not possible without the industrial phenomena. Its greater meaning is its transformation of social and economic classes that are so prevalent within the novel itself. Status and wealth are key characteristics to Dicken’s characters and the aiding of the railway to provide this prosperity and narrowing of the widespread disparity is shown in his character development. Dombey and Son marked a great change in the nineteenth century as the great tamed dragon rolled across Europe and improved their lives, even their sandwich-boxes. Work Cited Dickens, Charles. Essay About Myself - 1734 Words

School, to me and among many peers of my age, is not a distant term. I have spent one-third of my life time sitting in classrooms, every week since I was seven years old. After spending this much time in school, many things and experiences that happened there have left their mark in my memory. Some are small incidences while some have had a great impact on me. However, regardless the degree of significance, things that happened all contributed to shape the person that I am now. I was accused of cheating for the first time when I was seven years old. It was during the term final where the performance of the test indicates all the progress the student had made throughout the semester, so its importance was never over emphasized. Though†¦show more content†¦Everything started anew, I was all by myself. While I was busy getting used to the school and making new friends, I also discovered a new passion, soccer. Through soccer I was able to meet some of my most loyal friends. We would often get together and play soccer against other classes. The school required a test for admission, so the competition was getting fierce. The teachers focused a lot on our academics and tried to squeeze as much time as they can from us to study. As the result, we were not allowed to play soccer during our free time because it hinders us from studying. Maybe it is human tendency to break laws, but the gang of us didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t want to conform to that rule so sneaking a soccer ball to school and keep it away from the teachers became an everyday challenge. It was amazing the kind of ideas we came up with for this task. Soccer added spices into my otherwise boring school life, and it served as a channel between me and my fellow classmates. Through soccer we found a common ground, that we were able to know each other more and support each other no matter what happens. It gave us a sense of unity, and it was very important to me. Even now I cherish the pact I had with them back then - the support that helped me to stay on the right trac k during my rebel teenage years. A View On Censorship In Music and The Government Essay Example For Students

A View On Censorship In Music and The Government Essay The censorship of music and other forms of entertainment by the government have long been the topic of discussion among social and political circles. Some forms of censorship such as warning labels for parents can be helpful. However the censorship of music is just not right, and the government has no right to do so. All too often the government gets this self righteous feeling and thinks that it has the right to control what goes in or out of this so called free nations mind. Censorship in music falls into one of those categories in which the people and the government, which is supposed to be a representation of the people, have extremely conflicting ideas on the subject. Some say that the government should regulate the music industry. They say that the people dont know what is best for them as a whole. Their proof is in the increase in violence, crime, unadulterated sex and other taboos that has been on the rise in recent years. There are those that say that the government should o nly slightly be involved. These are the proponents of warning labels and the like, and that is about the extent of what they want the government to interfere with. The remainder generally says that the government has no right infringing on entertainment at all. They say that the government does not have the right to decide what the people can or cannot see, read, or listen to. Most of those who are of the opinion to let government help regulate the entertainment industries take the all too familiar tragic occurrence at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado as proof of their position. On April 20, 1999, two students interred the school and killed twelve other students, a teacher, and then themselves, and set the media and the entertainment worlds ablaze. The two killers were said by their peers to be avid fans of Marilyn Manson, and were even said to almost idolize him. Marilyn Manson is an accused shock-rocker who has been described by the music press as an ultra-violent sata nic rock monstrosity. There have also been several other reports of teenage killers who have been big fans of the rocker. Thurston High School student Kip Kinkell, who murdered his parents and two students in Springfield, Ohio, was said to be a listener of Marilyn Manson. In Edinboro, Pennsylvania, Andrew Wurst killed a teacher at his eighth-grade dance. In Pearl, Mississippi, Luke Woodham murdered his parents and a classmate. All of these kids were heavy listeners of Marilyn Manson. People are using the increase in violence among children as proof that violent-themed music is causing a change for the worse in kids and young adults today. It appears to me that this is a case in which people want to blame someone or something, and he is the easiest and most obvious choice. An easy assumption, but it is just that, an assumption. When asked for proof, as has occurred in recent years, various reports are mentioned that supposedly have scientific proof of the correlation between the incr ease in violence and violence in music. A recent article by the American Medical Association was quoted as saying the link between media violence and real life violence has been proven by science time and again. How can the American Medical Association have jurisdiction over the music industry and say what its product effects? Music has nothing to do with medicine. Psychology, maybe, but definitely not medicine. A vast majority of media publications refer to these reports, but never give the information to find the reports themselves. This to me is no coincidence. Every article that I have read in my research has quoted lines out of context in an effort to emotionally sway the reader. Out of context of the feeling of the songwriter, not of the lyric. First of all, songwriters write for themselves. Even with more songwriters today openly saying that they like being rock stars for the money, they began writing for themselves. Even if they didnt get paid to write, they would still writ e. Therefore their songs are representations of their mood and thoughts at the time. Every person has their own deep dark thoughts that would shock others, and they keep them intensely private. However some choose to express them in their lyrics, but they are still just words. The problem comes when people fail to realize this. The problem also comes when people have to be spoon-fed their thoughts, because they cant form an opinion for themselves. People today need a mind of their own. I say that people need to blame themselves for the things they do. People need to stop avoiding the issues of personal integrity and respect. People need to pressure parents to raise their kids in such a way as to teach these things to them. A few decades ago, Elvis was thought of by many as the devil. They thought that his dancing was too sexually explicit for the young girls of the day to be seeing. Led Zeppelin was thought of in much the same way. Today, Elvis is considered a king, and Led Zeppelin is considered to be one of the most influential bands of all time. Todays society harshly criticizes artists, and even go as far as calling them satanic. Countless social problems dealing with youth were and are blamed on music. The trend is sadly spreading to other nations as well. French rapper NTM was arrested for so called offenses against public authority in 1996. In Pakistan, a popular rock group called Junoon has been repeatedly banned because of the content of their lyrics. Nigerian Afrobeat artist Fela Kuti was regularly imprisoned. His son now leads his Movement Against Second Slavery (Naylor). There is evidence of what is happening. Strauss Zelnick, the head of BMG Entertainment, has said that the Federal Trade Commissions survey shows that seventy-four percent of parents are satisfied with the current system of parental advisory stickers, which warn parents of explicit lyrics. If the people supposedly need their entertainment screened for their own good, then why do so many of them say that they are satisfied with the current limited form of warning labels? Why does the government want to increase the level of censorship, when the people say that they like the current level? The incident at the Woodstock 99 Festival in rural New York is another attempted example of violent actions and violent music. On the last day of the festival, the crowd was whipped into a frenzy consisting of burning cars and speakers and people dancing naked among the flames. Ironically, the band playing at the time was the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who were naked except for a sock, which covered their male anatomies. Even more ironic is the fact that they were doing a cover of Jimi Hendrixs Fire. Five hundred riot police were called in. Later that evening, Limp Bizkit stirred the spectators into an even greater frenzy. The mob eventually destroyed the entire park. Many had the nerve to say that it was the actions and words of Limp Bizkit that caused the actions of the crowd. T his is also the same festival that had five-dollar hamburgers, two and a half-dollar cokes, and unsanitary toilets of which were few and far between. Again, an example of using the first and most obvious scapegoat that is available. The bottom line is that music is not cause of action, violent or otherwise. Music consists of thoughts, feelings, moods, attitudes, and ideas. Music is not a tool to affect the nation and its actions, and there has been no conclusive evidence otherwise .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073 , .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073 .postImageUrl , .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073 , .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073:hover , .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073:visited , .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073:active { border:0!important; } .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073:active , .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073 .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u659d63ef97846416a7eefd6660932073:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Harriet Tubman Essay We will write a custom essay on A View On Censorship In Music and The Government specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now

Routine message free essay sample

Also called positive/neutral informative messages or routine announcements, Routine Informative Messages are a common type of Professional Communication. To practice writing a Routine Informative Message you will write a one-page memo to employees announcing the new and revised employee education policies. Read the scenario below and present a solution in your own words, using your own analysis. You will not use all of the information included in the scenario. Some of the information will help you understand the context and implications of the document you create but would not be included in the actual message. Remember it is never appropriate to cut and paste entire sections from the scenario as a substitute for your own writing and thinking. Communication Scenario: Announcing an Employee Education Program You are the human resources director for Easy to Be Green (EBG), an innovative new company that helps homeowners, businesses, and municipalities become more environmentally friendly. We will write a custom essay sample on Routine message or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page EBG wants all employees, whatever their position, to be able to discuss with customers, at least in a basic way, the scientific concepts behind the company’s products and services. Therefore, all employees are given a thorough orientation and ongoing training in these concepts. However, the trainers have begun to realize that for this training to be successful many employees need background work in reading, writing, and math. In addition, because of the company’s rapid growth and because of continuing developments in the field, even employees with advanced scientific training are having trouble keeping up with new developments. Beginning six months from now, EBG will offer basic, intermediate, and advanced courses in reading, writing, and math. In the meantime, managers will evaluate employees and may recommend that employees take one or more of these courses. In addition, employees can choose to take a course or courses without their manager’s recommendation. The courses will be offered during  work hours, employees will be paid for the time they spend in class, though homework and studying must be done on employees’ own time. Books will be provided. Progress in these courses will be taken into account in employees’ quarterly performance reviews and annual salary reviews. Employees who are beyond these basic courses but who need help in keeping up with scientific developments related to their work are encouraged to take courses at local universities, using the company’s tuition reimbursement program. Employees have expressed the following concerns about the tuition reimbursement program: 1) that the maximum reimbursement is not high enough for the better schools 2) that the program doesn’t cover books, 3) that new employees are not eligible. Therefore, also beginning in six months, the company will enhance its existing tuition reimbursement program. The current maximum reimbursement of $3000 a year will increase to $5000 a year, and employees will be reimbursed for books as well as tuition and fees. Currently, full-time employees must be with the company for six months to be eligible; now all full-time employees will be eligible. Additionally with approval from their managers, employees will be able to take off a half day, with pay, on the days their courses meet. To receive reimbursement under these special conditions, however, employees must receive at least a B in the course. Otherwise the required grade for reimbursement is C. Other current tuition reimbursement policies will remain the same. Finally, to help employees who have not been able to find appropriate courses, the company will provide a list of available and recommended courses at local universities Assignment Write a one-page memo to employees announcing the new and revised employee education policies. In your memo, select, organize, and format the necessary information into an effective, reader-friendly routine informative message. Plan carefully which information you need to include and which information you will leave out. Introduce the message in a short first paragraph with the goal of encouraging readers to take advantage of the program. The first paragraph should serve as an introduction to the message as a whole; therefore, it should avoid focusing on one aspect of the message to the exclusion of others. It should provide a brief overview of the information in the message. Organize the necessary information under headings in the body of the message. Use headings that make the information as easily accessible to readers as possible. Do not use a heading for the first and last paragraph, both of which should be fairly brief. Headings and bulleted/numbered lists should follow principles of logic and parallel structure. For reasons of logic, there must be at least two headings; for reasons of readability, avoid more than about five. Keep items in a bulleted or numbered list logically and formally parallel. The bulleted or numbered points can be phrases, sentences, or brief paragraphs, as long as the list as a whole is consistent. A sample is included below. Adapt your approach for the assigned topic.

Recommendations for Writing a Five-Paragraph Essay

Recommendations for Writing a Five-Paragraph Essay Five-Paragraph Essay: Basic Recommendations for Writing Among academic writing tasks, the five-paragraph essay is one of the simplest tasks. The main challenge here is a selection of topic. But for some students, it also can be different from formatting the text right or from conducting some research to provide the relevant info according to the essay topic But you need to keep in mind that the main thing here is to arrange the sentences logically in every paragraph. You have only 5 paragraphs, but usually, they allow disclosing the topic completely. The subject of your essay can be selected from the teacher’s suggestions, online examples or your own preferences. By the way, the examples, that are available online, can be not only the sources of inspiration but your templates as well. You can borrow the style, approach, topic, but you cannot copy the entire text as this is called plagiarism, which is forbidden. In academic writing, it is not accepted. Now you know the general facts about this type of writing. To start with, you should create an outline first to arrange a further writing process. As a rule, you will have to write an outline on your own, without any teacher’s help. Here’s an example for you: Abstract paragraph (in case you are writing in APA style). This part of the text should contain the main point of the essay (usually 3-5) and this paragraph should not be longer than 150-200 words. Introductory part. Make your first sentence catching to get the attention of the reader. Make a short outline of the further thoughts you are about to disclose in your essay. Point out the goals of your essay and the main statement you are about to prove. We advise mentioning your main thought, the theses in the last sentence of the introduction to make your reader intrigued and keep reading. This part will be the longest as this is where you put details and prove your points. You should provide here strong arguments to defend your point of view. We recommend conducting deep research before writing to get the cases of a decent level. Also, it would be wise to add at least one paragraph that will reveal the opposite point of view with proof why this point of view can or cannot exist. Considering that, your essay body may consist of three paragraphs to fit the 5-paragraph structure. It may be similar to abstract in length, but you should add here more than just a summary of the main points of your essay and the strongest arguments. You should rewrite the thesis of the paper and make some conclusions considering the presented info and thoughts. This can be some forecast, for instance. Or you may provide any other ideas that are appeared in your head after researching the topic. Depending on the chosen or required style, this part may be called â€Å"Reference page,† â€Å",† etc. But in any case, you should include here any sources of information you have used in your research, especially if you have cited any of them. Give credit to the books, articles, papers that have influenced your writing. Here’s an explanation of why this type of essay is called a five-paragraph essay. This is one of the common tasks that you can find on English language exams, like SAT, TOEFL, and IELTS. The similar structure with 5 parts is also used for general admissions essay writing. If you want to get the highest grades on your exam, you should study various style requirements to make sure that your approach fits them in any aspect. Also, keep in mind that you will have a restricted period of time for writing task. As a rule, you get no more than 50 minutes to complete the whole work. Your successful 5-paragraphs essay together with college admission can add more points to raise your chances for entering. Here are 5 main styles that could be chosen for writing an essay: Narrative; Argumentative; Expository; Persuasive; Cause Effect. Expository essays consist of 5 paragraphs and you need to conduct in-depth research to disclose the problem. You need to present examples and proofs that help to maintain the ideas of your essay, and you can find them in the relevant resources. You do not have to write your own opinion in this article. But you should provide a decent number of thoughts and arguments from the sources you have found. Narrative essays with 5 paragraphs refer more to the creative side of the student. You should not write here exclusively informative content. You can share your thoughts, experience and other information that you can come up without any additional sources - this essay helps in developing the writing skills required for college applicants. When you are assigned with argumentative or persuasive essays, you should know that they have a lot in common. First thing here is the 5-paragraph structure, for sure. But also the purpose of these essays is the same as you need to persuade the reader and provide strong arguments. When you have a 5-paragraph limit, you need to select arguments and thoughts carefully in order to provide the most relevant ones. Use trustworthy sources of information as well. Also keep in mind, that here you will have to follow the strict formatting requirements. Cause and effect essay can also consist of 5 paragraphs. It presents the events in a way that affect each other. Shortly speaking, you should write here about how two events are related. Ideas for Introductory Paragraph You need to hook your reader from the first sentence, so we have prepared some ideas for a strong start for your intro: add a quote; set a scene; cite words of well-known people; tell a joke; add a movie quote; ask a rhetorical question; ask a regular question; add a piece of poetry; use a metaphor; tell your personal story in 1-2 sentences. Or you can come up with your personal ideas. Tips for Body Paragraphs and Conclusion in 5-Paragraph Essay As soon as you have got the reader’s attention, you need to justify their time and provide an exciting and relevant body as well. Make sure that you can add to your essay strong arguments, relevant real-life examples, various points of views, etc. to disclose the topic and lead to the expected results. Keep in mind using the transition words as they help to move from one point to another smoothly. Use words like â€Å"moreover,† â€Å"finally,† â€Å"so as† etc. to connect the thoughts in your essay. The repetition of the theses will serve as a reminder to the readers why you are writing this essay. You can even try to end up with a provocative question or thought in order to leave a strong impression. Also, you can motivate readers to conduct a particular action like researching, debating and so on. The excellent choice of topic is defied when readers keep discussing it after reading the essay. Formatting Tips for a Five-Paragraph Paper Keep in mind that any essay should be formatted in a particular way. Check formatting matching along with grammar and plagiarism check. You need to format the reference page correctly as well. Check whether you have added the following info: the name of the author of the source; the name of the source; the publisher; the date of publishing. If you still not sure you can create a decent essay, ask for professional help. You can ask our expert to create a great essay to show you how things should be done.

M9 Discussion Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

M9 Discussion - Assignment Example Everything we learned about simple linear regression is a special case of multiple regression. Multiple regression is required when a single-predictor model is inadequate to describe the true relationship between the response variable y and its potential predictors (x1, x2, x3 . . .). Adding predictors is more than a matter of â€Å"improving the fit.† A multiple regression is used to define linear relationship between a response variable y and more than one explanatory variable x. In multiple regression, more than one explanatory variable are used to explain or predict a single response variable. The multiple regression model assumes that the mean of the response variable y depends on p explanatory variables according to a linear function ‘Î ¼y = ÃŽ ²0 + ÃŽ ²1x1 + ÃŽ ²1x2 +†¦+ ÃŽ ²1xp’. In this case, the mean response is not observed, as the observed values of y vary about their means. However, we can think of subpopulations of responses, each corresponding to a particular set of values for all of the explanatory variables, and in each subpopulation, y varies normally with a mean given by the population regression equation. The regression model assumes that the standard deviation ÏÆ' of the responses is same in all subpopulations. A logistic regression is used when the response variable has only two possible values such as success or failure, live or die, acceptable or not. Logistic regressions work with odds rather than proportions. The odds are simply the ratio of the proportions for the two possible outcomes. The logistic regression model relates the log of the odds to the explanatory variable. A logistic regression models the log odds as a linear function of the explanatory variable, which is given by the equation ‘log odds = ÃŽ ²0 + ÃŽ ²1x’. A simple linear regression is a flexible way of analyzing linear relationships between two quantitative variables. A key assumption for simple linear regression model is that the deviations from the model fit

Role and Functions in Law Essay Example for Free

Role and Functions in Law Essay What is law? Law is a system of guidelines and rules that have been set in place to maintain order and conduct. In order to be successful in society or a business the Law plays a significant role in regulating behavior whether in school, home or work. This paper will discuss the functions and role of law in society as well as business, along with the functions and role of law in the Healthcare industry of which I’ve been a part of thru employment for the past 23 years. Functions and Role of Law in Business and Society Whether in Business or Society, the functions and role of law, serves the same purpose, to peacefully resolve disputes, maintain control over a situation, as well as to protect. In businesses, whether corporate America or a family owned business the employees consist of a diverse group of people from different backgrounds and cultures with their own cultural beliefs. With Such a diverse group of individuals there is bound to be conflict not just with the employees but management as well. In businesses there are unethical acts that take place, however, some rules are violated unknowingly, not because the individual is unethical, it is simply because they did not know what the rules were. One way to make sure the Laws are enforced, and the business is in compliance is for Management to go thru training not only to learn the law which are known as policy and procedures and to teach the law but also to be able to handle certain situations that could possibly create a lawsuit such as sexual harassment issues, inappropriate language, misuse of the company’s equipment and/or confidential information Functions and Role of Law Healthcare Being in healthcare for over twenty three years, there are many laws that exist, one that stands out is the Health Insurance Portability Act of 1996 (HIPPA). HIPPA protects patient confidentiality and their privacy which allows the provider to be cautious as to how they share as well as with whom they share patient information with. HIPPA is divided into five rules or standards: The HIPPA Privacy Rule which mandates the privacy and protection of health information, The HIPPA Security Rule mandates the security of electronic medical records, The Transactions and Code Set Rule addresses the use of codes, The HIPPA Unique Identifiers Rule identifiers are used for covered entities to promote efficiency, standardization and consistency and finally The HIPPA Enforcement Rule increase the penalties for HIPPA violation. Diagnosis, treatment, medical records and payments are some of the things that are considered private information. In order for one to be HIPPA compliant the law is broke even if the patient is a family member because at this point, they are a patient. There are penalties for breaching the HIPPA laws, the penalties range from $50,000.00 to one year in jail to $250,000.00 and 10 years in jail along with not ever being able to work in the healthcare industry again. For example, there was a young lady who handled posting patient payments whether it was check, cash or credit cards. While working, The FBI showed up and was taking pictures then seized everything that was on her desk. Come to find out she was a part of a huge identity theft ring and was stealing patient’s credit card information and ordering online as well as using their credit to create other lines of credit. She violated over 200 patients. She now is awaiting trial due to the fact the hospital pressed charges as well as the patients and they are seeking the maximum sentence. Conclusion In conclusion without any type of laws, rules, or policy and procedures in place, there would be no type of order in society as well as at work. True enough, there are those that break the law some by choice and some not but the fact remains, you break the law, you pay the price. References Bagley, C. E., Clarkson, G., Power, R. M. (2010). the patriot review :: essays research papers

The Patriot Movie Review The Movie, The Patriot, was a rousing and vigorous Revolutionary War epic from the view point of a family full of revenge and strong wills. This movie began with the majority of colonists angered. This part of the movie caught my attention and intrigued me to keep watching until the last minute. I especially enjoyed the heartbreaking moments and the realistic war scenes in the movie. Although I liked those aspects of the movie, the storyline was exceptionally good as well. To understand this historical fiction movie, a historical background is needed. If a person does not understand what is meant by â€Å"Taxation without representation,† then the subject of conflict will not be understood. The plot of the movie began to develop when Benjamin Martin’s son, Gabriel, was captured by British troops. Benjamin Martin was a former hero of the French and Indian War, but he renounced fighting so that he would be able to raise his family in peace. Attempting to save his brother, Benjamin’s other son stood up to the British soldiers, but was killed in the process. Benjamin, only wanting to save Gabriel, ended up fighting in battle, rescuing Gabriel, and killing the murderer of his other son. After all of this happened Benjamin realized the importance of being involved in the war, so he sent his other children to live with their aunt in order for he and Gabriel to join the army. Once they became part of the army, Benjamin became a general and lead his colonial militia, including Gabriel, into trifling battles. During battle Gabriel was killed, which deeply depressed Benjamin and made him so distraught that he does not feel like fighting anymore. His feelings stayed this way until (while at the camp) he saw the Brit that killed Gabriel. Benjamin then killed that man and understood at that moment why so many men had been dieing. Because of this, Benjamin became extremely patriotic and decided to move on with the Americans because he then had something t o fight for. Everything that happened kept me on the edge of my chair wanting to know what was going to happen next. Overall, I thought that this movie was very moving and vigorous. Although I enjoyed the main portion of the movie, there were some obvious likes and dislikes in my opinion. I believe that I learned from this movie and it helped me understand more of what the people of that time were feeling.

Fractional Distillation of Crude Oil Essay

Aim: To investigate the substances given off at different temperatures from crude oil (petroleum) mixture. Apparatus: * Fractional Distillation glassware and thermometer * Clamp stand x 2 * Conical flask * Supply of cold water * Rubber tubes x 2 * Test tube rack * Small glass test tubes x 5 * Rubber stopper x 5 * Evaporating basin * Micro Bunsen Burner and bench mat * Wooden Splint * Stopwatch * Boiling stones * Crude Oil supply Method: 1. Set up the clamps stands and the fractionating glassware as shown in the diagram. 2. Connect the rubber tubes to the two open tubes of the condenser. 3. Connect the other end of the rubber tubing to a water tap and let the other one flow into a basin. Turn on the tap. 4. Place two boiling stones into the conical flask and then pour in the crude oil into the flask. Place the flask right above the micro-burner as shown in the diagram. 5. Heat the crude oil mixture slowly. Record at which temperature one of the compounds in the mixture evaporate, and then collect it in the small test tube after it passes through the condenser. 6. Repeat step 5 until maximum temperature has been reached and/or no more compounds evaporate. 7. Test the compounds which were collected. Light them in an evaporating basin and record the time it takes to run out. Results: Data Table of Results of Hydrocarbons tested Hydrocarbon Compound Boiling Point Range (à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½C) Colour Viscosity Pentane 36 – 40 Colourless Very Low Viscosity Hexane 66 – 69 Colourless Low Viscosity Heptane 90 – 94 Very slightly cloudy Viscous liquid Kerosene (Paraffin) ~ 250 Brownish – black High Viscosity Conclusion: These results prove to us that firstly, crude oil being a mixture of several hydrocarbons, that the mixture provided was a simulation. Secondly, there are noticeable trends in the hydrocarbons. As the molecules gets heavier and heavier, by which I mean that we go from pentane to Hexane and so on, the viscosity of the compound increases, as well as the time taken for it to burn up completely. The boiling point also increases. These hydrocarbons belong to the first organic homologous series: Alkanes. Alkane molecules are completely saturated and each carbon atom has at least 2 hydrogen atoms attached to it. Apart from the two end carbon atoms, the other ones are attached to two other carbon atoms each. A covalent bond between a carbon atom and a hydrogen atom is strong, and a bond between two carbon atoms is also strong. It therefore takes a lot of energy to overcome this bond, and hence a higher temperature and more time is needed to break these compounds apart. The more carbon atoms an alkane possesses, the more energy is needed to break it apart. This explains the increasing boiling points, and is also one of the main reasons why hydrocarbons are used as fuels. Kerosene was the only one of the four hydrocarbons which could not be heated to its boiling point and hence the temperature recorded is the one that was given to us. It did, however, last the longest when it was burned. Therefore that result coincides with the one that was given to us. Its other properties which could be verified have given us further proof of the fact that its temperature is higher than the other hydrocarbons’. Also related to the viscosity, the weight of each hydrocarbon also increased as the viscosity increased. By the time kerosene was being handled, a really wide margin of difference could be felt from pentane. Evaluation: Weakness Improvement 1 The equipment available was not enough to determine the boiling point of Kerosene Get a macro burner and heat the kerosene to its boiling point 2 The difference in viscosity between the first two hydrocarbons was hard to tell Measure the poise of the two compounds and record the difference 3 The evaporating basin in which the hydrocarbons were heated was the same all throughout Use a different evaporating basin for each compounds so that the heat from the previous test does not affect the next test 4 The main mixture provided to us was not actual crude oil, simply a simulated substitute To gather all of the compounds found in crude oil use a mixture which contains all of them kind of obvious
